Why is the Pekapeka Special? Poster – SLJ #23

This Kick Start activity is all about learning facts about the pekapeka! We’re creating a poster to share the most interesting information we’ve discovered and why it’s special. To start, I read through these facts and a transcript on Google Docs.

Once I finished that, I wrote down the interesting facts I found. One thing I didn’t know was that they’re actually endangered!! I had no idea this could happen to a pekapeka.

As for the main question: WHY is the pekapeka special? My answer is that they’re super special because they’re one of New Zealand’s only native land mammals! It’s a bat that can fly and crawl on the ground, which is pretty unique! The pekapeka is also important in Māori culture and has its own myths. Isn’t that awesome?!

I wish I could see an actual pekapeka – have you ever seen one before?

Totally Awesome Sea Turtles Poster – SLJ #22

Finally found the Kick Start activity from Totally Awesome Sea Turtles! This one is about writing at least five facts about sea turtles and finding a picture of one too. My poster has all the facts on it, and it turned out really interesting once I wrote them down.

Now, why are sea turtles AWESOME? In my opinion, it’s because they’ve been around longer than dinosaurs, travel thousands of kilometres across the ocean, and help keep marine ecosystems healthy. Plus, they can live for up to 100 years and are super important to our planet! 🐢

What about YOUR opinion on why sea turtles are awesome? I’d love to know! 🌊

Wavey Words Kick Start – SLJ #13

Here’s a Kick Start activity that I haven’t done yet. First of all, I had to brainstorm some ocean-related vocabulary using a Word Wheel, which was really helpful. Once my brainstorming was finished, I got to put all my amazing words into a poster.

The poster shows all the words I came up with but is way more colourful and eye-catching. The most challenging part was honestly brainstorming the words—it can take a while! This probably took me about five or seven minutes. After that, my Chromebook needed charging. Still, I learnt some new words that I didn’t know before, just from watching the video.

I wonder if you know any of these words? Or maybe you’ve seen them at the beach! I’ve seen a cliff in Samoa, and my cousins used to jump off it. Pretty scary!

My Own Wanted Poster – SLJ #2

Kia ora! Today is another Summer Learning Journey but Step it Up activity, the other one was just a Kick Start─as in a quick practice. Anyways, for the Step it Up activity, I get to make my own wanted poster with another dangerous sea creature.

In my poster, there’s a small picture of my dangerous sea creature─The Great White Shark─with two boxes that each has an explanation for WHY is it dangerous and SAFETY tips.

HEY HEY HEY!! Do you know anything about dangerous sea creatures? I know that Great White Sharks are dangerous because of their big, sharp teeth 🦈🪥

Wanted Stonefish – SLJ #1

Kia ora! Today I have joined in the Summer Learning Journey, where I get to do fun learning activities over the Holidays. As you can see, my first activity is a Kick Start about creating a wanted poster for the Stonefish.

In my poster, you’ll be greeted by the huge and bold “WANTED” title above, a vintage paper background, a lot of research for safety tips and what to do when stung by a Stonefish, and lastly a HUGE no-colour picture of what a Stonefish looks like.

I wanted to create a poster-theme from a different time zone, approximately between the 90s. The reason why is because I wanted to try out different styles or time zone or even cultures for each of my activities-that would be MUCH more fun!

Anyways, would you make a poster from a different time zone? Have you ever encounter a Stonefish before (I haven’t because I have a phobia of the ocean)? Do you always feel insecure when swimming in the ocean?

Don’t be shy to leave a positive comment! 🎉

THREE FACTS ABOUT THE STONEFISH!:

1 – Stonefishes are consider to be one of the world’s DEADLIEST fish! 😱

2 – Did you know these stonefishes are extremely GREAT at camouflaging, what amazing hiders! 🤩

3 – They mostly spend their time just sitting motionless on the bottom of the seafloor, so keep an eye on the ground🧐

Spring Learning Journey – Sixth Activity
