My Ocean Collectables – SLJ #5

Kia ora! Here’s the Kick Start activity, this one is about hand drawn collectable cards. If you don’t know what collectable cards are, they are usually just pictures and information about someone or something and is part of a set that is collected by trading with other people. For example, Pokemon cards!!

Anyways, I drew five characters based on ocean creatures like they instructed, each of them with one fact and their personality. It wasn’t too challenging because I’ve been drawing since I was six, and drawing “people” is my thing.

I also thought it would be nice if my collectable cards were in a Google Slide, but still have that template they shared. Please leave a positive comment and tell me which character you like or is more likely you!!

  1. Kia ora Leata,

It’s Mrs Stone (your old Literacy teacher, now part of the Summer Learning Journey team).

Wow! I am blown away by the quality of your blog posts. Your blog is absolutely fabulous – you have done the teaser week activities to such a high standard.

We were so impressed to see how you had taken this activity to the next level, by creating a card deck through Google Slides. Your illustrations were fantastic and you gave so much detail about each character as well. I am awarding this an ‘outstanding blog post’ (which equals more points).

Octavia is like another take on Ursula from the little Mermaid, but this time she is not a villain, but misunderstood. Such a creative idea!

    Which is your favourite character?

    Keep up the great mahi,
    Mrs Stone

    1. Talofa lava, Mrs. Stone!

It’s so wonderful to hear from you again, and thank you for your lovely comment. I apologise for the delayed response—my Chromebook was away for a while, but I have it back now, so I’ll do my best to keep up with the activities. ❤

Regarding Octavia, she’s ACTUALLY a character inspired by the BACKSTORY of Ursula. As you may know, Ursula was banished from the sea for using dark magic and greed in an attempt to steal the throne from Triton. This story reflects the theme of being misunderstood, just as you mentioned!

As for my favourite character, that would be Marlo 🐠 from slide 5. Marlo is based on one of my female cousins, who serves in the U.S. Army (not NZ). It takes a lot of bravery and determination to be like my cousin, and that’s what I see in Marlo.

He’s like a strong rock, dealing with many cracks, yet standing firm. 💪

Thank you again for your thoughtful comment!

  2. Kia ora Leata,
My name is Mrs Williams and I work with the Manaiakalani team on the Summer Learning Journey. I’m the designer of the Cartoon Collectibles activity and I was just so surprised and amazed with what you did with it here – you took this idea to a whole new level! Wow! It was so much fun reading all about your characters and thinking about other movie characters they make me think of! You have a creative mind and a wonderful drawing ability, which you’ve obviously developed through lots of great practice. Keep up the wonderful creations!

I look forward to seeing more posts from you across the Summer Learning Journey,
    Ngā mihi,
    Mrs Williams

    1. Talofa lava, Mrs. Williams!

Thank you for your kind comment! I was away for a while, but I’ll do my best to catch up as quickly as I can. As for the Google Slides, I thought organizing them this way would make them easier to follow and more visually appealing. Each of these characters was inspired by either movies, family members, friends, or myself.

If you’re interested, I can share the inspiration behind each character:

Maris: Inspired by cruel, beautiful people on the outside but ugly on the inside 🤢

Octavia: Inspired by Ursula’s backstory from The Little Mermaid 🧐

Koa: Inspired by my cheeky little brother, Filipo 🤪

Marlo: Inspired by my cousin in the U.S. Army ☺

Sunny & Noctis: Inspired by the Stokes Twins’ physical appearance and emotions 👬

Thank you again for taking the time to comment!
